So the meeting with the MS Nurse was fine by all accounts. I went with the notion that I would start on Avonex as my first choice of DMT. well my first choice is Tysabri but I will have to play the waiting game on that one. So she talked me through the four choices of medication , and I ended up choosing one that I had totally discounted in my research. I want to start on Rebif purely because of the little gadget auto injector! The other do have the option of using an auto injector but you still have to work with needles as such in put the meds in the needle/mix the solution and so forth. Not with the Rebif!
It is a little computerised handheld that is no bigger than a mobile phone/MP3 player. The soultion is premxed in a little container which you place into the unit. The needle is just a little tip which comes in a little container that you slot into the bottom of the machine. It is fully automated and tells you how much meds you are injecting, when your last shot was etc. Each vial of solution lasts two weeks in the machine. Overall it is an amazing little gadget! The only downside as such is that you have to inject three times a week but it is a very small needle head and therefor it doesn’t have to go into the muscle as with the Avonex. All in all I figure it would be easier to work with the RebiSmart, yes I have to do it three times per week but it would be a bit more painfree that one deep muscle jab. They all do the same job in the end and the choice is left down to the patient , so it is all about what works for you and how it fits into your life.
I am feeling a bit more optimistic about having to use the DMT’s after talking with her. There is a waiting list of 13 weeks, so I am due to start them in May…
